BMCC Distance Learning for Students - Blackboard (2024)

"What is Blackboard?"

Online courses are hosted and delivered through Blackboard, and many in-person courses use it as well. You access Blackboard by logging in via CUNYfirst. Each course is organized slightly differently depending on the instructor and the modality (fully online, online, hybrid, or in-person).

Log In to Your Blackboard Courses

All students log in to Blackboard the same way--using their CUNY user ID. Your instructor will notify you if you will be using Blackboard in your course. You can also check if the course appears in your Blackboard Home Page. Watch this video to learn how to access it.

Navigate Blackboard

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, then what is a video worth?! Watch the following short video which shows you how to access and navigate most courses in Blackboard. Remember, every course is different, so take the time to explore the course.

Blackboard Collaborate Ultra

Louis has been a full-time student at BMCC, however, this semester he has chosen to go part-time and only take two online courses. BMCC's online offerings provides various flexible options for students like him and he has decided to take advantage of them. Louis understands it's extremely important to connect with his professor so he wants to have at least one virtual meeting with his professor. He sets up Collaborate on his desktop with a microphone and camera.

Assignments

Alona is a stay-at-home mom who really enjoys being able to take an online course here and there. Eventually, she hopes to complete her A.A. in Liberal Arts and go on to a four-year institution. She has a paper is due Saturday at 5pm. However, Alona knows it's best to upload the paper at least a few hours before to make sure everything runs smoothly. If something goes wrong with the upload, she can contact her professor and ask her to clear the attempt.

Tests and Quizzes

Karim is a full-time student at Brooklyn College, but is a non-matriculated student here at BMCC. He has a test that's due at midnight for one of his courses. Rather than wait until the last hour, Karim sits at a laptop with a strong internet connection a few hours before the test is due to complete the test from beginning to end.

Discussion Board

Javier is a full-time student at BMCC. He likes to take a few online courses every year because he likes the convenience of working from home and not having to commute in from Washington Heights. Today, he has to answer a Discussion Board forum post and then reply to other students' posts. Javier quickly looks over the Netiquette guidelines and writes out his answers on Microsoft Word to double check tone and spelling.

Blackboard App

Aryana has a one hour commute to work every morning. While she's on the train, she reads course documents using the Blackboard App.
